knowing is half the battle!

Knowledge is power! Please read your beauty product labels just as you would your food labels.  In fact, many chemicals and compounds are more dangerous when applied to your skin than they are when  ingested. You’d never eat lotion, but in some cases, it might be safer than applying it to your skin.  We eat our vegetables, we exercise, we try to be healthy. We make choices everyday to take care of our internal organs. Our skin is our largest organ, and we often neglect its power and influence over the rest of our body.  Think about it…. many medications are applied to the skin, such as hormone creams, nicotine patches, and birth control.  These work well because our skin absorbs them quickly and carries the medication to our bloodstream and throughout our entire system.

Did you know that parabens, synthetic fragrances, and pthalates effect our bodies in the same way as estrogen? When we use bath and body products that contain these compounds, our hormonal balance is thrown off. For both men and women, increased estrogen has many negative and potentially very harmful side effects. For women, excess estrogen has been linked to PMS, PMDD, depression, anxiety, fatigue, acne, weight gain, migraines, thyroid issues, endometriosis, polycystic ovaries, infertility, miscarriage, and even breast cancer.  When we use bath and body products that contain these estrogen-mimicking compounds, we are increasing our risk for these dangerous health and fertility issues.

I don’t just know these things from research, I know them from experience. My husband and I have been trying to start our family for several years. After the first year of trying unsuccessfully, my doctor recommended that I start paying attention to toxins in the products I use. At the time, I had no idea of the dangers involved in my heavily scented, synthetic, commercially manufactured beauty products, or how they might be effecting my fertility. And I certainly had no idea that her simple suggestion would ignite a passion in me that has led, years later, to the wonderful endeavor that sweetcream organic has become.

Thank you for reading. My hope is that you will, with new eyes, begin to see clearly the dangers hidden in the products that line grocery store and even health food store shelves.

When you know better, you can make better choices. Just ask G.I. Joe… knowing is half the battle!
